Silk Scarf Marbling
Create your own beautiful 11 x 60 silk scarves. The technique is marbling. You choose the colors, sprinkle them on to the medium, comb them into a pretty pattern and dip the raw silk into it. It’s that easy! We have the supplies and equipment—you supply the creativity. Only $13 per scarf to make your own. $25 for a pre-made scarf.. Join us at the College of Leonard (the back room of The Kaleidoscope Factory) in downtown Pomeroy.
Reservations are required. I need a commitment for a minimum of 6 scarves to be made. I also need to know the number of black blanks and the number of white blanks you need. Black ones don't show color very well, but gray and white designs on them look really nice. Figure on about 15 minutes per scarf plus about a half hour drying time after the last one is made. 10 days advance notice is nice so I have plenty of time to procure materials.
Here's the procedure. Before you show up, I soak your scarves in an alum solution and dry them. This is a mordant which makes the silk retain the acrylic colors.
I then prepare a tub of "size". I dissolve carageenan in 4 gallons of distilled water. The size has a consistency of egg whites. The ink is then gently floated on the size and swirled into patterns. The blank scarf is dipped and then hung to dry. (Click on thumbnails below to enlarge)..
